VENOM #1 in MAC
After a dominating performance in the Mid-Atlantic South D-II Conference last year, USA Rugby decided to move Venom into Division 1. The team pulled together to face the challenge by increasing recruiting efforts, dedicating themselves off the pitch and scheduling a 14 game spring season. In their return to Division 1, Venom went undefeated in conference play and headed into the tournament with a 21-2 record.
The MAC Finals matched Venom up against Philadelphia on Saturday, May 7th. Despite an extremely muddy pitch, Venom was able to maintain great ball position and win, 32-0.
The conference finals put Venom up against this year’s MAC rivals, NOVA. Having faced NOVA twice already, both teams knew what to expect. NOVA scored first, giving them a 5-0 lead at half-time but Venom answered quickly at the start of the second half to lead, 12-5. NOVA scored in the corner late in the game but a missed kick left the final score with a Venom win, 12-10.
Winning MAC earned Venom a playoff spot in USA Rugby’s Round of 8. The team will travel to Pittsburgh, May 21-22, to play Boston for a quarter-finalist position and the potential to move on to the National Championship match in Glendale, CO. Venom needs your help to get there and any amount will help! Raleigh Rugby Football Club is a registered Non-Profit organization so all donations can be claimed on your taxes.
