Raleigh Rugby is hosting the Carolina Youth Rugby League Finals Day this Saturday May the 8th at our pitch.
We will host a total of 16 teams from around the state to include age brackets for U19, U15 and U13 youth rugby.

This is a big event for youth rugby in North Carolina and also an opportunity for our club to make a great showing for youth rugby in Raleigh as well as to pick up a few valuable/needed dollars for our club’s maintenance.

Youth rugby is FUN to watch and there will be plenty on hand that day. These young men (and hopefully we can add young women to that list soon) are the future for our club and rugby across the state. Let’s keep our club growing along with youth rugby. Be sure to bring your cameras and future Raleigh Ruggers also.

Tommy Myatt

SERA - South Elite Rugby Academy. Upcoming summer rugby camp in Greenville, SC by Furman University July 10-14. ..

From: Reid, Patrick <preid (at) greenville.k12.sc.us>

Hi folks,

Please promote this camp to your team. There were about 30 kids enrolled last year, representing GA, NC, SC and TN. It was a really good camp, the first one. The kids learned some rugby, had fun and made new friends. And there is A LOT more interest this year.

The camp is in Greenville at Furman Univ. They have a rugby stadium and a beautiful campus. Vince Atkinson, coach the Rugby South Collegiate All-star Team and Charlotte Rugby Club, is the head coach. USA College All-Americans serve as counselors.

You can help by forwarding this along, posting links on websites, etc.
Below is a link to the brochure this year and the website. They are on facebook, too. If you have more than a handful from one team, they will give you a team rate. To my knowledge there are just few HS camps in the South this year.

http://www.furman.edu/if/serabrochure10.pdf

http://www.southelitesportsacademy.com/

Facebook: search "South Elite Rugby Academy"

Congratulations to all the Raleigh Rattlesnakes U19, U15 and U13 players for their participation at the Charlotte Rugby Fest 2010. This was Raleigh’s first visit to the Charlotte Rugby Fest ever in our 4 year history and all Rattlesnakes saw match time at one point or another. The “experience” was good for the youth club players young and old.

Many thanks to the parents and our Parent’s Organization who made the trip and for which without their participation, this event would not have been as successful as it was. The parents have made an impact this year.

Hats off to Coach Frank Milchuck along with John Kellerman and Kent Jeffries.

Please help us to continue to recruit for our U15 and U13 clubs that are in the making.

Raleigh Rattlesnakes U19 Rugby: Congratulations to The Raleigh Rattlesnakes U19 Rugby Club that went 3-0 at the Carolina Youth Rugby Festival in Charlotte to take the 2010 Plot Hound Division with wins over Alpharetta A, Greenville A and Chinguacousy, Canada. Under the watchful eye of Coach Frank Milchuck the Rattlesnakes exhibited great team effort with a "no superstars" team approach and attitude in almost every phase of the game. This weekend's wins bring our new record to 0 Wins and 0 LossesJ. In other words, great job, shake it off and get prepared for the next match. Lots of rugby to play and some tough opponents to boot.

Raleigh Rattlesnakes U15 and U13 Rugby: The Raleigh Rattlesnakes U15 Club teamed with Triad on Saturday 3/13/10 with Triad to play the Cayman Islands, and then split players for the second match between Unionville, PA and Triad. Raleigh U15 players Garrett Murphy, Kent and Kurt Kozel, Matthew Padro and Ty Myatt all played and moved around at various positions during the weekend. Raleigh is still recruiting to build the ranks of their U15 program and is close to fielding a full side. This past weekend was a great experience for the U15 crew who helped to form teams for match play with the Matthews, Triad, Chapel Hill and Unionville Rugby clubs this season. At the Charlotte Rugby Fest, Speedy Garret Murphy played at wing positions, while twins Kent and Kurt Kozel played at prop/lock positions along with Matthew Padro. Ty Myatt saw play at the wing, lock, inside center and prop positions throughout the weekend.

These young men along with Noah Milchuck, Joseph “Mighty Joe” Stillwell and Chad Maskell are Raleigh’s first full contact U15 squad.

Also speaking of firsts, the trio of Noah Milchuck, Joseph “Mighty Joe” Stillwell and Chad Maskell all played in Raleigh’s first full contact match in the U13 Division teaming with South Charlotte to take on Matthews and all played stellar rugby and represented Raleigh well. Very proud of these young men.

Tommy Myatt

The Raleigh Rattlesnakes U19 Rugby Club fell behind quickly in the first half of play against the defending four time state of North Carolina State Champion Chapel Hill Highlanders U19 with a score of 22-0.

Fans watching would not believe that score in that Raleigh looked fairly dominating at times. Coach Frank Milchuck made adjustments at the half and the Snakes came out and played a great second half and held the Highlanders scoreless for the remainder of the match, while Raleigh put up a try to bring the final score 22-5.

While we never enjoy coming out on the low end of the score, the Rattlesnakes have continued to improve over the last couple of years. At this point last year the Snakes were coming up on a 4-0 record but this year’s team is just as good if not better and making progress with each match. It just so happens that the state champions live right in our back yard and we give them a great matchup every time we play. With the coaching staff presently in place, support from the Raleigh Rugby Club and the growth of the parent’s organization, it is just a matter of time before Raleigh brings home a championship.

The young Raleigh U15 Rugby Club mixed sides with the visiting Chapel Hill U15 Club to run a regulation 12 on 12 match on the upper pitch while the Venom took on Norfolk on the lower pitch. Lots of fun to see two matches going on at the same time on a sunny afternoon.

The Raleigh U15 players picked up some valuable playing time and experience and actually did well. Very proud of these young men, some as young as 11 putting it out on the line.

The Raleigh U15 players will travel to Charlotte with the U19 club and will most likely join forces with the Triad Club for the Charlotte Rugby Fest on March 13th and 14th.

Saturday, in a see-saw match the Raleigh Rattlesnakes U19 Club battled an experienced Triad Youth Rugby U19 Club to a 17-17 tie. The Carolina Youth Rugby league does not play overtime during regular season matches. Both teams will accrue 2 points each towards the league standings.

For anyone that attended, it was a great day of youth rugby for both sides and fun to watch. Raleigh again fielded a young team with 3 new players seeing time in their very first match.

This young Rattlesnake team will continue to improve as the season progresses and yesterday's match was another notch in the experience belt for Raleigh youth rugby. There was plenty to take away from the match with regards to our aspects of play needing improvement as well as areas where we show a lot of promise

Thanks to those fans from both sides who showed up to support their respective teams. The numbers are starting to grow, of course, still not the numbers we would like to see so keep checking the schedule and we expect to see more faces out at the pitch on match days for the Rattlesnakes, Venom and Vipers.

Thanks also go to the match referee and Raleigh's own Carl Brienzi for taking the time to explain to the young players of both sides the reason for the call as well as ensuring safe play techniques, namely in the scrum and tackling. Carl had his hands full with matches yesterday in Raleigh and at NCSU and we really appreciated having him out. With a shortage of referees to go around, it is not always easy finding a reliable, thorough referee who is also certified at the youth level. That might be why Carl is requested by name by many of our league teams. Our referees are as much a part of our game as our players. It is not an easy task, and we certainly salute all who "step up" in this endeavor and make our play possible. I speak for all of our Rattlesnake coaches and players in saying that your three cheers was well deserved.

The Rattlesnakes will be practicing this week and readying their play for the visiting and defending state champion Chapel Hill Highlanders this coming Saturday on March the 6th with a U19 kickoff time of 11:00am. There will be a U15 match afterwards with a scheduled kickoff time of 1:00pm.

Respectfully,
Rattlesnake Coaches
